I have always loved playing rhythms. I started playing
guitar when I was 14. After progressing past 1st position
chords, I was learning the lead lines of Maybellene and
Johnny B. Good. But I was even more fascinated with the
driving rhythms of Scotty Moore "Mystery Train, That's all
Right Momma" and Carl Perkins "Blue Suede Shoes",
Boppin the Blues". Also, James Burton " Travelin Man,
Poor Little Fool, Hello Mary Lou".
I still love playing syncopated driving rhythms. To me
the rhythm is the essence of the song and sets the
tempo, tone and roll of the lyrics.
To me the best songs are those that combine a good
syncopated rhythm with meaning and emotion filled
lyrics, sprinkled with tasteful lead lines, (not just a
hundred notes played as fast of possible) blended and
working together to make each part better.
This is the formula and goal used by myself and Tom
O'Neil, my friend, band mate and musical collaborator to
write our original music.
